Unraveling the Stress Stack™
- The key to unraveling your Stress Stack™ is to first
understand its characteristics. Each
individual’s Stress Stack™ is unique, dynamic, cumulative and holistic.
- Over fifty years
ago, the famous biochemist Roger J. Williams of the University of Texas at
Austin conclusively proved that we are all biologically unique. Since it is obvious that we are also
mentally, emotionally and spiritually unique, it stands to reason that we also
are unique in our ability to withstand and deal with chronic stress. For example, if you are a corporate office
worker, you likely are continuously exposed to a high level of electronic
equipment toxicity, perhaps a daily dose or doses of caffeinated beverages, and
maybe a pattern of chronic sleep deprivation.
On the other hand, if you are an agricultural worker, you may be exposed
to high levels of chemical fertilizers and, if you smoke, to the effects of
cigarette smoke. Each of these
examples, and more too numerous to count, create an individual set of stressors in each category, and therefore and
individual Stress Stack™.
- When you review
the individual blocks of the Stress Stack™, you can see that each of the blocks
varies continually over time in both their size and their effect on your
body. Again using the example of the
corporate office worker, the effect of each of the factors mentioned above will
vary based on the frequency and duration of exposure. The same can be said of the agricultural worker, or anyone else
for that matter. The Stress Stack™ is
constantly in motion, with the effect of each block continually varying over
time.
- However, the
effects of each stressor are always cumulative,
unless you take positive action to reduce their effects. In his landmark book “Caffeine Blues,”
Stephen Cherniski discusses the “vacation illusion,” the perception that “a
couple of weeks off” will leave you good as new.
- In reality,
unless you take major positive action to deal decisively with the causes of
stress as contained in your personal Stress Stack™, the “vacation reality” will
result in simply a delay of the inevitable crossing of the catabolic threshold,
where progressively more destructive changes in your body will ultimately
result in the descent into overt illness.
- Perhaps most
important is your understanding that chronic stress is a holistic
phenomenon. In this “fast
food”-oriented society with its emphasis on easy, quick fixes, we tend to
gravitate to anything that seems rapid and simple. However, recovering from the effects of chronic stress is
neither. The conditions that have
created your Stress Stack™ have, in most cases, taken years to develop to their
current state. In order for you to
recover from them, they all need to
be addressed. This may, in some cases,
take a period of several months to accomplish.
Beware of other solutions that may be offered, claiming to quickly
relieve your stress in a matter of days or weeks. They may be able to stave off the symptoms you are experiencing,
but the underlying processes will still be busily at work and, in time, will
inevitably overwhelm those quick, easy fixes.
Only when you embark upon a plan to comprehensively address all of the factors in your Stress Stack™
will you begin to effectively and permanently solve the problem.
